DAY 1 - Tuesday

SEPTEMBER 13

NEW LONDON, CT

We drove through some pretty heavy rains in RI and CT on the way to the New London Ferry
that goes across Long Island Sound to Orient Point on the north fork of eastern Long Island.

Arrived early enough to catch an earlier boat.

The Groton Monument commemorates those lost in a 1781 battle for independence
from the British  at Fort Griswold in the Revolutionary War.

The U.S. Coast Guard Academy is also in New London a little farther up the Thames River.

There was still some weather in the skies over the New London Harbor Lighthouse

The New London Ledge Lighthouse is just off the coast at the mouth of the Thames River.
There are several similar lighthouse in Long Island Sound.

The Lighthouse was built around 1909

Approaching Orient Point Long Island

ORIENT, LI, NY

Part of the journey was to find and photograph fireboats for the website.
By planning a little ahead, the journey from one boat to another is a great way
to see and enjoy everything in between that would not be otherwise.

Orient has two boats, in two different locations.

ORIENT

Doors open at the Orient Fire Station

EAST MARION

The next town in from Orient is East Marion and they had this Fire Rescue boat
parked at their station. It wasn't on the original plan, so it was a bonus find.

GREENPORT

Greenport is one of the larger towns in that part of Long Island.
A quick visit to the fire station.

Down by the harbor in Greenport.

The Greenport Fire Rescue boat.
The "North Ferry" behind it will take us across the bay to Shelter Island.

The North Ferry uses several ferries to constantly provide transportation
between Shelter Island and Greenport.

One of the Shelter Island fire stations

SHELTER ISLAND

One of the reasons to go to the beautiful Shelter Island was to see if they had a boat.
Mission accomplished.

SAG HARBOR

On the south side of Shelter Island is another short ferry ride on the "South Ferry"
across a bay.

A little drive into Sag Harbor and another boat.

"They Need A Bigger Boat"
Most of the departments in the area are all volunteer and have to raise money for everything.

A lot of the stations, being volunteer are unmanned and closed up.
So finding cool apparatus parked outside is a bonus as well.
At Sag Harbor.

EAST HAMPTON

East Hampton has a large, impressive station.

They maintain a couple nice old engines out back.

MONTAUK

At the very east end of the southern fork of Long Island is Montauk Point.
A quick trip out there to find this interesting fire rescue harbor patrol boat
docked at the USCG station at Montauk.

AMAGANSETT

On the way back from Montauk, the Amagansett Fire Department was doing
hose testing and several apparatus were parked outside. A definite stop for photos.

Long Island fire departments are well known for their brush trucks.
They call them "Stump Jumpers".

While similar in purpose and appearance to Cape Cod "Brush Breakers"
the Long Island trucks are definitely different and interesting to check out.

NORTH SEA

One of the fireboats on the list was this North Sea Fire Dept boat.

A North Sea station

FLANDERS

It had been a full day with a lot of driving and picture taking.
One last boat for the day at Flanders, just outside of Riverhead which
would be our stop for Night 1.
